For as long as I can remember, Saturday Mornings were always Prawn Mee Mornings for our family. My father would drive to our favourite Jalan Sultan Prawn Mee for our weekly fix. My mum and I often got the dry version, my father and sister would order the soup. While waiting for our noodles to arrive, we would also order some deliciously crispy Wu Xiang Bing. I always chose the bright orange water chestnut cake - the crunchy texture made it my favourite item! Once our noodles arrive, we will make sure to top our bowls with the special chilli powder before tucking in. Oh that spicy, piping hot soup of goodness - Yum!

Having grown up in Singapore, I often think of my childhood and reminisce about all the wonderful memories eating out at hawker centres back home… the newspaper seller at my neighbourhood whampoa market, the koel bird, the cool breeze in the early evenings, the sound of ingredients being tossed in woks and the giant flames. The aunties and uncles going ‘来！找钱！’ The ringing of bicycle bells, the ah pek clearing his throat… all so insignificant sounding but when put together, they form a core memory in my heart. A memory of home.

Oh what I would give to have a whiff of the aroma and taste of the different foods of which I so love and dearly miss! Growing up in Southeast Asia, food will always be a part of me. No matter where I go, what I’ve eaten, hawker food will always have my heart…. to celebrate, I’ve created a special Kopitiam 88 Series and I hope the pieces in it bring you joy and think of home too.
