If there’s one Singaporean dish that makes me super homesick, it would most definitely be a warm bowl of Minced Pork noodles aka Ba Chor Mee. This dish is what I think of when I miss my family. I grew up spending weekends slurping up Ba Chor Mee with my family, at our local Soon Lo Mee. Sadly, it’s no longer around. But I will never forget how the super friendly aunty always comes around to take our order. My sister and I would sit at our rickety wobbly table, waiting in anticipation, watching the Mee Pok uncle toss the noodles and coat it in bowls of sauces. ‘Is it mine?!’ ‘No! I think uncle is making mine, that’s yours!’… It was always so much fun guessing who’s bowl would arrive first. If only I could enjoy a bowl with my family right now!

Having grown up in Singapore, I often think of my childhood and reminisce about all the wonderful memories eating out at hawker centres back home… the newspaper seller at my neighbourhood whampoa market, the koel bird, the cool breeze in the early evenings, the sound of ingredients being tossed in woks and the giant flames. The aunties and uncles going ‘来！找钱！’ The ringing of bicycle bells, the ah pek clearing his throat… all so insignificant sounding but when put together, they form a core memory in my heart. A memory of home.

Oh what I would give to have a whiff of the aroma and taste of the different foods of which I so love and dearly miss! Growing up in Southeast Asia, food will always be a part of me. No matter where I go, what I’ve eaten, hawker food will always have my heart…. to celebrate, I’ve created a special Kopitiam 88 Series and I hope the pieces in it bring you joy and think of home too.
