Driving around Singapore, searching for good food has always been something my family would do. My Father loves driving and my Mother loves going on ‘car rides’. So as a family, we were always going from one place to another just for a bowl of noodles that we love. And a trip to Holland Village is always what my family did, whenever we craved Ipoh Hor Fun! We really liked their slurpy noodles, topped with chicken slices, greens and of course, the thick gravy! Funny thing is, years later, I came to learn that the real Ipoh Hor fun from Ipoh is actually way lighter, in a nice chicken and prawn broth. So this piece is for all of you, my Malaysian Ipoh Her Fun lovers - Definitely no gravy sauce for you. Hahah!

Having grown up in Singapore, I often think of my childhood and reminisce about all the wonderful memories eating out at hawker centres back home… the newspaper seller at my neighbourhood whampoa market, the koel bird, the cool breeze in the early evenings, the sound of ingredients being tossed in woks and the giant flames. The aunties and uncles going ‘来！找钱！’ The ringing of bicycle bells, the ah pek clearing his throat… all so insignificant sounding but when put together, they form a core memory in my heart. A memory of home.

Oh what I would give to have a whiff of the aroma and taste of the different foods of which I so love and dearly miss! Growing up in Southeast Asia, food will always be a part of me. No matter where I go, what I’ve eaten, hawker food will always have my heart…. to celebrate, I’ve created a special Kopitiam 88 Series and I hope the pieces in it bring you joy and think of home too.
